YANN MARTEL
LIFE OF PI, 2003, Canongate
The life of Pi starts fairly
slowly, as all boys lives do. He discovers Christianity, Islam and
also becomes a Hindu whilst living the interesting life of a zoo-keeper's
youngest son. This slow start provides a backdrop to compare the
unbelievable adventure that he and Richard Parker (the tiger) have
together. It accelerates, drawing the reader into a story of survival
in the strangest circumstances, based on a faith in God and a knowledge
of captive animals. AN aug04
